“One day we’ll be sitting on columns of air.”

Above there is a concept illustration that merged the two main references for this project: the aesthetic essay “In Praise of Shadows”, and Marcel Breuer’s Wassily Chair.

During the study of “In Praise of Shadows”, I came across an attempt, by the author, to define luxury as being something, cold, even threatening. This ended up serving as the main premise for the project.
Regarding it’s form, I adapted the “Wassily Chair” - Marcel Breuer, it’s author, did a movie where he follows the evolution of chairs, until the point of his own creation, and then proclaims that in the future there will be no need for this object to exist, assuming that we would simply seat on columns of air. It does not exactly follow his line of thought, but it makes for an amusing visual pun (hopefully).

Usefulness of that which is Useless

Whilst I was making “Marcel” I decided to add another distressing element provoke fear to it’s potential user.
Based on Bruno Munari’s Useless Machines, I created a marble pendant supported only by a string, in order to have a dinamic element contrasting with the frozen state of the chair.

An incentive to self-exploration

Erotic Toy

The project is the result of a collaboration between myself and two collegues, Eduardo Marques e Marta Camarate, born after a discussion regarding the visual culture of sex-related products.
Our objective was to create a toy that enabled users to explore their bodies, or their partner’s bodies, in a playfull way, rather then solely focusing on penetration, or other more specifc actions, as most sex toys do.
The toy has a container which allows for the user to fill it with liquids such as lubricant.

The foundry project came after collaborating with a sculpture, Miguel Silva, where we used damaged parts from cars to repurpose the aluminium contained within the pieces. Afterwards I decide to attempt a technique, based on Studio Droog’s works, to convert foam into an aluminium body.

After this first stage, I continued exploring the technique and began focusing on production some sort of structure.  I kept using foam, specifically styrofoam, to create the surface of the piece. I found a foundry in Torres Vedras (Portugal) that worked with me to materialize the rendering above. After a couple of tries this was the final result:
